San Antonio River Walk (San Antonio, TX)

If you have not been there, you need to go there now :-)
To me, it should be one of the top destinations in the USA. In fact it is consistently named 1 of the top 20 US destinations by travel magazines and sites. The River Walk itself is unique. I have been to other places where they try to do something similar but nothing is as authentic as this. One thing unique about this River Walk is that it is not boringly designed the same way for the entire length of the river. Each section is different. Very interesting.

Tips:
1) The Riverwalk is FREE.

2) If you have small kids, bring strollers that is light and easy to fold up. There are bridges and stairs to the street level that are not very stroller friendly. Some are pretty steep too.

3) Take the river cruise at night. You have a totally different view of the river from the cruise.

4) If you plan to visit San Antonio in January, don't forget to check out the drain dates from the link below. Once a year, they drain all the water from the River Walk to do maintenance.

http://www.sanantonio.gov/dtops/riverwalk/maintenance.aspx

I have copied the drain dates here for your convenience:

2011: January 3-11
2012: January 2-8
2013: January 2-10
2014: January 2-10
2015: January 3-9
2016: January 5-11
2017: January 9-15
2018: January 8-14
2019: January 7-13
2020: January 6-12
2021: January 4-10
2022: January 10-16
2023: January 9-15
2024: January 8-14

5) The River Walk is even better during the Holiday seasons (November (the Friday after Thanksgiving-January 1).
The whole river is lighted up like a wonderland. Thye also have the parade on the river so check out the site in #8 below for more information.

6) Plan to spend half a day in the River Walk including a meal and river cruise.

7) There are other attractions in and around San Antonio like The Alamo, the Missions, SeaWorld, Schlitterbahn Water Park (which was named the #1 water park in the world by the Travel Channel) and many others.

8) Check out this site http://www.visitsanantonio.com for more information about San Antonio as well as getting coupons, deals for Hotels, theme parks, restaurants etc... and travel guides mailed directly to your house for free of course.
