Dallas Zoo (Dallas, TX)

This zoo is a giant. I have mixed feeling about this zoo. The older side needs serious make over while the newer side (Giants of Savanna and Wilds of Africa) is absolutely what a great zoo should be.

The older side seems like it's been there for a while. Cages are put up around building, small structures and walls. There is a large metal Fish tank above the ground level. And it was dusty in the kid area. Things seemed a little odds and un-natural here.

BUT...after crossing a long tunnel to the newer side, everything is just the opposite of the old section. Everything is well designed and decorated. They have elephants (you can come really close to them), giraffes (you can buy the food and hand-feed them), cheetahs, zebras, ostriches, Lions (best view I have ever seen) and others. From the Serengeti Grill restaurant, you can literally stand next to the Lions behind a glass windows. It was surreal. Whatever you do, try to get to this restaurant in the afternoon to see the Lions. See some of my pictures. It looks as if I was in the Lion paddock. And also notice the people standing next to the Lions behind the glass windows. For this section alone, it is well worth the trip. To me, this is simply one of the best zoos in the US.

Did I mention they have a monorail (for $3/person) going around the Wilds of Africa. This is simply amazing. I just wish they have one going around the Giants of Savanna as well.

VL Rating: Good (because of the old section of the zoo), Excellence ( for the Giants of Savanna and Wilds of Africa)
